THE ART OF EDITIONS - PEN TO PRESS

Create editions of prints, cards, book plate and more with your own imagery. Learn experimental printing techniques including pressure printing, pouchoir, carved blocks, solar plates, wire and more. Learn how to use a Vandercook printing press for non-traditional printing.

TUESDAYS: 10am to 1pm

POETIC THRIFT - Creative Mending

This eight-session class will cover the history of mending traditions across the world and teach participants practical and aesthetic techniques for common mending needs such as mending woven fabrics with inserted patches, appliqued patches, needlewoven repairs, and hand darning; mending holes and tears in knitted fabrics; hidden mending methods; and embellished stitches, including sashiko, cross-stitch, and other embroidery. We’ll finish with a comprehensive sample book and a variety of personal mended items.

Books, Boxes & Portfolios

Learn basic bookbinding and box-making skills as you make books and boxes designed for specific purposes. We will make easy sketch books that open flat, a small portfolio, a magic box with a hidden compartment, a companion box to hold your art supplies and more.

CALLIGRAPHY - Classic & Experimental

Learn the art of beautiful writing in a relaxed setting. Starting with classic Portland-style italic letters, we will learn variations and different effects using experimental tools. We'll make iron gall ink and cut a goose quill pen. One session will be devoted to creating decorated papers to use in a small hand-sewn book of our writings. Beginning to intermediate level.

Learn basic bookbinding skills as you make books that are unusual in some way. Our focus will be on using recycled and repurposed materials. We will make a long-stitch book with a slotted cover, a flag book, a secret Belgium binding, a leather-wrapped book, a companion book for travel and more.

SATURDAY SPECIAL:

ITALIC HANDWRITING & Calligraphy

Learn beautiful italic handwriting for daily and special use. We'll study from materials developed by Lloyd Reynolds at Reed College. Cursive writing is linked with better hand skills and improved memory. We'll use edged pens to create calligraphic versions of our letters.
